Although the holidays can be magical, it’s unfortunate that household garbage increases by as much as 25 percent from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Believe it or not, the largest percentage of that waste is food waste. Makes sense right?! That can be especially true this year. I mean...you’re probably attending and hosting parties with people you may have not seen for over a year. YES! FINALLY! We love a holiday bash as much as the next person, but we seriously love the following plastic alternatives to food storage!
Food Storage Alternative 1: Beeswax Wraps. These babes are a reusable, sustainable alternative to single-use plastic cling wraps. You use the heat from your hands to mold them around the tops of food storage containers, or you can wrap food directly/create your own baggies with them. They're perfect for half-used lemon and avocados. The wraps we carry are made from organic cotton, beeswax, jojoba, and tree resins, which have antibacterial properties. Easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to love! Shop them here.
Food Storage Alternative 2: Stasher Bags. Stashers are made from platinum silicone (literally the best), which does not degrade over time. From freezer to microwave, from oven to dishwasher, Stasher bags are made to last, each one keeping thousands of single-use plastics out of our oceans and landfills. We’re obsessed because they’re beautiful, functional, and something you can reuse over and over again—inside and outside the kitchen. We poach eggs in them, freeze our leftovers in them, and yes, we even wrap our gifts in them (not just during the holidays). We also use them as our toiletry carrier when we’re traveling. Shop our Stasher bag collection here.
Food Storage Alternative 3: Compostable Cling Wrap and Baggies. Not ready to invest in a Stasher or Beeswax Wraps, we’ve got you! Compostable options by Responsible are a great alternative to plastic cling wrap and baggies. These resealable bags and cling wrap by Responsible are made from renewable plant materials and are compostable and biodegradable! Why should that matter?! Last year alone, over 5.3 million Americans used 10+ rolls of plastic cling wrap each. Because it clogs/breaks recycling machinery, it is very difficult to recycle—so much so that 13 MILLION cubic yards of it ends up in landfills. Shop Responsible products here.
And last, but not least, here’s a quick food storage tip: Make sure you are storing leftover food correctly. For the food you keep all for yourself (we get it, we love holiday cookies too!), make sure you store it correctly. The rule of thumb is that leftovers can be safely kept in the refrigerator for three to four days and frozen for up to 6 months. Our final reco—not sure which alternative to reach for?! Purchase reusable beeswax wraps for leftovers you’ll eat quickly and Stasher bags for your frozen goods. Done and done! All food storage products are 10% off today, Thursday, December 2 to celebrate Day 2 of Motherlovin' Holidays.
